Episode 11 - Battleships Cometh + Streight Angular
Well, we’ve been on an unofficial hiatus for a bit.   Unfortunately we did not let the two awesome bands we have on the show know this.  Until we get our act together, we are going to lie low.  I (Ted) am working on a new music project and I need to get that finished before I get the podcast rolling again. Lets not focus on our total procrastination though.  Lets talk about The...

Bridges And Squares 10 - Quilt
Bridges & Squares is killing it in ‘11.  We took our baby steps in 2010 and now we are graduating toddler school.  What a better way to start off a new run of episodes than with Quilt.  When we started the show last year, Quilt was always one of the bands we wanted to have on as guests.  Thankfully, they found the time for us in January.  We recorded them at Great Scott, for our first...

Double Mega!
We’re back!  The show is back!  Yay!  Since we’ve been away for so long we’re dropping not one but two episodes of Bridges And Squares on ya head.  We’re calling it the Double Mega Comeback Show.  Where have we been?  We have been in a land I like to call Lazy Land.  We recently observed that people sometimes get lazy when they work full-time and try to produce a podcast in...

Bridges And Squares 09 - Radio Control
It’s Hot Audio! Radio Control reminds us why punk remains an essential part of rock.  We don’t all need to be Joe Satriani and play obscure music scales.  Radio Control realize that energy and passion is what really makes music great.  In fact, I like listening to their music ten times better than listening to Mr. Satriani overplay his guitar.  Radio Control’s music makes you...

Bridges And Squares 08 - Alchemilla
Alchemilla is one of the hottest bands in Boston.  Since they dropped their new album, Chasing Ghosts, they can’t stop getting played on the radio.  Their music combines well-crafted hard-rock with Kat Burke’s soaring vocals.  Good singers are few and far between these days so it is nice to hear a truly talented singer like Kat.  Plus, their music is tight.  These guys come ready to...

Bridges And Squares 07 - Night Fruit
Wait a second, this is almost a quick turn-around from the last show.  Wow!  On episode 7 we have great band that is fairly new Night Fruit.  They emerged from another Boston band Hot Box.  To me, their sound is made up of the guitar lines from Built To Spill, Phil Collins style drumming, but with Sleater-Kinney style vocals.  If that description blows your mind, wait till ya hear the music. ...

Episode 6 - Deep Cuts Volume One!
“What?  I thought we got rid of them for good,” Some Guy. That’s right folks Bridges And Squares is back again with Deep Cuts, Volume One.  We’ve compiled a few tracks that we recorded that didn’t make it on the air for previous shows and decided to pack ‘em all together!  Plus, we have a couple songs from my band, The Exchange Rate, and a song from our...

Episode 5 - Ladderlegs
We made it!  It’s here!  You’re all excited right?  Why can’t I hear anyone?  For this episode, we have one of the bands I am most excited about in Boston right now, Ladderlegs! Be prepared to have your ears kicked in by their super quick set.  We suffered in a stuffy, sweaty attic to record them but they played great music that night.  We would have let them stretch it out but...

Where Have We Been?
Hey everyone. Its been a little quiet here at Bridges & Squares headquarters.  We’ve had a little life interfering with podcast action lately but don’t worry, episode number five is almost done being edited.  It features an insanely badass performance by Ladderlegs and a Streight Angular exclusive.  BTW, keep voting for them in the WFNX Best Music Pole!  Stay Tuned!

Streight Angular is nominated in the Pheonix best...
Is it a coincidence that our first guest, Streight Angular, was nominated for Best New Act in the Boston Phoenix best music pole shortly after they were guests on our podcast?  Well it probably is a coincidence but who cares, we were early adopters to the Streight Angular musical movement.  Listen to our first episode with them here.  The played some great music for us and give a good interview as...

Next up Ladderlegs!
Our next guest is lined up (I think).  We should be recording Ladderlegs next week.  They have one of the more original sounds in Boston right now.  They just put out a new album, so it will be great to hear some tracks from it.  On Wednesday we got to see one of our favorite local bands Girlfriends.  They got to open for two great indie rock bands, Love Is All and Japandroids.  They overcame...

Episode 4 - A Bit Much
That shit arrived like I promised.  This episode may be our best one yet.  A Bit Much were a great group of guys to record.  They the cool with us even though we had lots of technical difficulties.  Their music is like a tour of rock music from the sixties all the way up until now.  They do all this while keeping it light with funny lyrics.  Want some Doors-like keys with a Brian May rock solo? ...

Ergh...
As I was giving a last listen to podcast #4 before posting it, I noticed I didn’t quite fade my bed music while A Bit Much is playing.  Arrrgghh.  That is an unacceptable problem.  I can’t fix it until I get home from work so that shit will be posted tomorrow instead of today.

Then engines are revving up.
We recorded A Bit Much on Thursday.  I finished mixing it Sunday.  Let me tell ya, this set by A Bit Much is molten hot stuff.  The seem to cover multiple genres of rock in each song.  There are many echoes of classic rock’s past, whether it be Brian May’s guitar, Ray Manzarek’s keys, or many others.  Now that the music is mixed, I should have the podcast up either tomorrow or Wednesday.  Stay...

Ted Leo = Happiness
Hey all, Ted Leo/Rx, the band who provided us with a title for this podcast and is arguably the best band in our fair country has a new album out today, The Brutalist Bricks.  I’ve been listening to it on the myspaces and all I can think is that he brought it again.  It starts off seeming like he is going to stick to fairly straight forward rock songs but after a couple of tracks he...

Its All About The Community
Hey all, You may ask yourself, or maybe you don’t give a shit, who else is speaking the gospel of Boston Rock?  How about the Gospel according to Boston Band Crush.  Want to know a good local show to go to?  Their site is a good place to start.  Like unicorns with your punk rock?  Once again, they will satisfy these needs. You might say, “Boston Band Crush is awesome, but I also...

Number three is here to stay punks!  We stopped by the Friendly Square to record loopmaster Abram Taber.  The recording was so good that we decided to play the music before Meg, Colin, and I blab on about bands reuniting.  Meg lays the smack down, if you retire, you should stay retired.  Meanwhile, we had a chat with Abram at the Tavern At the End Of The World.  He gave us a little music history...

Hey everyone, Thanks for supporting local music.  Episode number three should be out real soon.  I’ll tease that shit now, the music sounds great.  We’re going to front-load the music a little more on this one because that is what this show is about right?  Don’t worry fans of Meg, she’ll still be cranky but after Abram plays a few songs first.  Our ‘interview’...

Bridges and Squares is Ali!
Our competitors will tumble like the Rumble in the Jungle.  We don’t talk no jive, Pitchfork Media will go down in five.  We don’t fear no hex, we play much better music then WFNX. Ladies bring your Kleenex, when we wipe the floor with the Boston Phoenix. We must be the greatest!

Does our name rip off Ted Leo?
Hell yeah!  Ted’s song Bridges and Squares mentions Kendall Square so I thought it might fit our local theme.  I actually asked him if it was okay to use the name and he said it was aiight.  I’ve talked to Ted many times and he is always a really nice guy.  Besides that, he is the best rocker in the nation. Listen to him now!

Riding On Down The Freeways
And they thought podcast two would never get done.  The Freeways are on!  They presented us with a paired down version of the band with Karen on guitar and Frank playing the Fender Rhodes.  Their music shimmers and the scaled back version of the band really shows off Karen’s voice.  You will not be disappointed by their performance.  They have a new album coming out soon, so keep an eye...

Abram Taber and Ladderlegs bitches.
Colin and I recorded Abram Taber tonight.  He manages to sounds like all of Sonic Youth and a vocal choir all at once… by himself!  Its mind blowing to see it in person.  We’ll edit it down as soon as possible and post it.  After his show, we saw Ladderlegs.  That is some good damn stuff.  They are bringing badass guitar music back to Boston.  Their music might fall apart at any moment...

I think I fixed the podcast feed.
Previously the entire tumblr (downloads and regular text posts) was getting posted to your podcast feed.  That is annoying.  Thanks to Yahoo Pipes, I filtered the feed so your Itunes (or whatever other podcatcher) only gets entries with an actual episode to download.  Episode two is coming real soon with The Freeways!  Stay tuned!

Our files are big.
Hmmm.  Looking at the many other podcasts I listen to, our file seems to be bigger than theirs’.  Even the ones which are comparable in length.  On the next episode I’ll attempt to compress the audio more so I don’t cram too much data in your interpipes.

We come Streight and Correct.
Streight Angular is our first guest.  What a way to get things going.  Colin, Meg, and I talk about what bands we were the last to jump on the bandwagon for.  Then we chat with Streight Angular and listen to their awesome music.  Please excuse the sound.  Its way to compressed at times.  We’ll have time to work things out soon enough.  Please go see Streight Angular and thank me later for...
